Arthritis is a group of conditions where there is damage caused to the joints of the body. Arthritis is complex disorder that comprises more than 100 distinct conditions and can affect people at any stage of life. Arthritis is the leading cause of disability in people over the age of 55. There are over 100 types of arthritis and rheumatic diseases including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and fibromyalgia. There are many forms of arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis are autoimmune diseases in which the body is attacking. Septic arthritis is caused by joint infection . Gouty arthritis is caused by deposition of uric acid crystals in the joint that results in subsequent inflammation. Forty-six million Americans report that a doctor told them they have arthritis or other rheumatic conditions. Arthritis is the leading cause of disability in the United States, limiting the activities of nearly 19 million adults

Additionally, there is a less common form of gout that is caused by the formation of needle shaped crystals of calcium pyrophosphate. This form of gout is known as pseudogout.
