Colds and flu are caused by viruses. Flu is short for "influenza." True flu is a virus that affects your upper respiratory and lower system your nose, throat, breathing tube, and lungs. In general, the flu is worse than the common cold, and symptoms such as fever, body aches, extreme tiredness, and dry cough are more common and intense. Colds are usually milder than the flu. People with colds are more likely to have a runny or stuffy nose. These symptoms can last four to ten days and will generally clear up on their own. You can treat the symptoms to feel more comfortable, but no medication will cure a cold. Anyone can catch a cold or flu. The peak season for colds is the colder winter months, not only because of the weather but because central heating dries out the normally moist nasal mucosa - an important defence against invading viruses. However, you can catch a cold at any time of the year; one particular type of cold virus thrives in the summer.
