Lumbago also known low back pain. It is defined as a mild to severe pain or discomfort in the area of the lower back. Lumbago can appear at any age, and people who do heavy physical work are commonly affected. The elderly are also very susceptible to lumbago. Lumbago may also be accompanied by other symptoms and signs such as loss of sensation (usually the sole of the foot and posterior aspect of the calf region) and motor function (usually loss of plantar flexion of the foot and toes as well as a diminished ankle jerk reflex ) in some areas and back stiffness (pain and rigidity upon movement of the lumbrosacral part of the spine ). Weak muscles in the Back & Stomach increase the risk of Backaches . A variety of problems in the muscles, tendons, bones, ligaments, or an underlying organ, such as the kidney, may also cause backaches. Lumbago is very common. 85% of people will be disabled by an attack of backpain during their lives, and at any given time 7% of the adult population is suffering from a bout of back pain. The major symptom of lumbago is acute or chronic pain felt across the lower back. Lumbago can have an adverse affect on the sufferer's life if it is chronic. Chronic lumbago can last for more than three months. This pain can sometimes be felt as far down as the thigh area. It may also be felt in the regions in-between, such as the buttocks or groin. Another symptom of lumbago may be spasms in the back. Lumbago affects the muscles around the spine area, which can spasm.
Spasms may also happen in the neck area, and lumbago sufferers often experience a stiffening of the neck. There can be many precipitating causes for backache. It can be caused by a variety of conditions such as a slipped disc, scoliosis (deformation of the natural curvature of the spine), osteoporosis (brittle bone disease) or, more rarely, by tumours or infection in the spinal area. Most common cause of low back pain is muscle strain or another soft tissue problem. It is usually only possible to pinpoint the exact cause of lumbago in about 30% of cases. The majority of those where another cause is not found are believed to be due to muscle sprain. It is believed that back pain is usually the result of spinal degeneration or injury, especially damage to intervertebral discs, These are structures located between the vertebrae that act as cushions. When muscles contract, Lactic acid and Pyruvic acid are produced as byproducts of muscular activity. It is the presence of lactic acid in the muscles that produces the familiar sensation of muscle fatigue following strenous activity. There are many non-surgical means of managing low back pain, and the vast majority of cases of low back pain can be successfully treated without surgery. Typical approaches include the use of NSAIDs (such as ibuprofen), physiotherapy and, if needed, one or two days of bed rest at the onset of severe pain.
