It tends to effect people in their 30s and 40s, but it can start at any age. It is totally different from the more common osteoarthritis , though both conditions can occur at the same time. Rheumatoid arthritis tends to come and go but if it continues for months or years it can damage the cartilage and bone underneath, and the joint becomes deformed and does not work as well. It can also effect the rest of the body as chemicals are released into the blood stream. Women are three times more likely to get RA than men. Palindromic rheumatism is characterized by sudden and recurrent attacks of painful swelling of the joints and surrounding tissues. Attacks may last for several days or just a few hours. Between attacks, pain and swelling completely disappear. There are many medicines that can help people with RA, but often they have side-effects. Simple painkillers and Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen are effective in some people. Disease-modifying drugs (DMDs) are most helpful if started as soon as RA is confirmed. Exercise is important for keeping joints supple, strong and mobile and this includes joints affected by osteoarthritis. Do wear soft-soled footwear that will act as a shock-absorber for your joints. Do stop exercising if you feel any pain and don't exercise if you feel unwell.
